The Cylinder Archive [www.cylinder.de] release for August 2010:

This lively played number by the Edison Concert Band predates the famous version by Bessie Smith by more than a quarter century. It features very distinctive ragtime influence. This Edison brown wax cylinder dates from approx. 1900/01 and was pitched to a playback speed of 140rpm.

Cylinders of this era would be still copies made by a pantograph. However, an increased playback pressure applied to the source cylinder did allow a better volume. The Edison laboratories had just started to use small series of molded cylinders to be used as master source records for final pantographic copies.
